I wrote it, first and foremost, to provide young activists in the anti-globalization movement with the essential intellectual tools we political economists use to analyze how labor markets, credit markets, international trade, and fiscal and monetary policy affect both efficiency and equity. I wrote it so activists could learn the difference between the economics of competiton and greed and the economics of equitable cooperation. I wanted them to be able to do solid economic analysis on their own, based on their own values, without falling victim to mainstream myths, and without having to rely on professional left economists like me to give them answers. I also wanted to keep the tools simple so they would be accessible to all. My second objective was to provide progressive faculty who teach introduction to economics classes with something to challenge the conservative mainstream texts we are saddled with. A third objective was to provide a modern treatment for instructors who teach political economy in an economics, political science, sociology, or international relations course.

The ABCs of Political Economy is now available from Stylus Publishing who is the distributor for Pluto Press in the US. It is an accessible introduction to modern political economy. While informed by the work of Marx, Keynes, Veblen, Kalecki and other great political economists, the ABCs teaches the reader the essential tools necessary to understand economic issues today from a modern perspective searching for ways to replace the economics of competition and greed with the economics of equitable cooperation. It empowers people who are dissatisfied with today's economies but are often intimidated by conventional economic analysis. No previous economics background is assumed, and everything is explained in verbal form in eight core chapters.
