2005 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival
Official selections for the 2005 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival are now on-line at http://highplainsfilms.org/festival/selections.html.
All screenings will be held at the historic Wilma Theater in downtown Missoula February 17-23, 2005. The festival will showcase over 70 non-fiction films from all styles, formats and production dates. Three separate awards will be presented for the competition films: Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, & The Big Sky Award, which will be given to one film concerning the American West. Our esteemed judges include visiting filmmakers and Montana industry professionals.
"We have a truly incredible line-up of films to present to our Missoula audience this year. Submissions were up to almost 600 and the high quality of entries made it a very challenging task to narrow the field to the 70 plus films we'll screen in February," said Festival Programmer, Doug Hawes-Davis. "We're also pleased to be showing these films on Montana's largest screen with excellent sound and image quality. Given the fantastic nature of the venue, the range of styles and subject matter of the films, and filmmakers that will be attending to represent their work, we are really looking forward to this year's event."
As part of the festival's commitment to illuminate the role of non-fiction films in documenting history and our place in it, the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival is proud to program contemporary and classic films that offer a breadth of topics, expression and perspective. We are also pleased to announce a retrospective series from two distinct and distinguished independent film companies for 2005, Maysles Films and Kartemquin Films.
Festival Director, Toni Matlock adds, "It's exciting to present films from the 1960s and 70s that are as fresh and thought-provoking today as they were at the time of their release. Viewing these older films back to back with brand new work provides an avenue for viewers to consider how the genre has evolved, but also to recognize the timeless nature of documentary film in a historic context."
Q&A sessions with filmmakers follow many screenings. In addition, this year we offer a free discussion panel with filmmakers. "Indie Doc: Speaking to the Source" will be held on Saturday, February 19, at 2 p.m. in Marianne's in the Wilma Theater Building.
